Through PGA Team Golf & Other Local Events, NYPD Golf Team is Flourishing
September 13, 2023NYPD Golf’s Jeanne Williams and “Sweet” Lou Cardenas carded a -7 under par 65, at Colonial Springs Golf Club in the Barstool Classic – Long Island Qualifier. Their third place finish in the Barstool Classic – Long Island qualifies the duo for Barstool’s end of season championships.
Barstool Sports / ForePlay Podcast selected six NYPD Golf teams to participate in the 2023 Barstool Classic. They were Williams (BS ECT/Cardenas (49 Pct), Joseph “JoJo” Carlsen (SRG)/Johnny Rigalos (DCPI), Brian Frawley (1st Pct)/Andrew Lava (DCPI), Vinchenzo Rallo (PSA 2)/Manny Ortiz (TB ATU – Retired), Elizabeth Marquez (Computer Crimes)/Bryan Quinn (Computer Crimes), and Mario Di Leo (Computer Crimes)/Mike Dominguez (Intel – Retired).
Cardenas and Williams, charter members of NYPD Golf, started their round on the 393-yard par 4, 5th hole in the shotgun format. In what turned out to be the toughest hole on the day for the pair, Williams/Cardenas each scored a double bogey 6. With Williams getting a stroke on the hole the team posted a net bogey 5. This was the only time they would be over par on the day. On the very next hole Cardenas posted a net birdie 3 to bring them back even. Through their first 9 holes the pair were -2 under par and tied for 4th place.
To qualify for the Barstool Classic Nationals you must finish in the top 4. Williams/Cardenas were in 7th place heading into the 14th hole. They proceeded to birdie four of the last five holes to grab 3rd place and a spot at the Nationals.
Jojo Carlsen and Johnny Rigalos, posted a -3 under par 69 to finish tied for 7th. They were able to land five birdies during the round, to just two bogeys.
Brian Frawley and Andrew Lava posted a net eagle on the 402-yard par 4, 15th hole. Though they birdied five holes, the six bogeys were too tough to overcome to finish in 11th place with a -1 under par 71.
Enzo Rallo and Manny Ortiz posted a respectable +1 over par 73, finishing 18th in the 48-team field. They recorded two birdies to go along with three bogeys on the day.
Liz Marquez and Bryan Quinn, the reigning NYS First Responders Open Champions had rough front 9 holes when they carded 3 bogeys and a double to go out at +5 over par, but turned it round carding a -1 under par on the back nine to finish in 28th place with a +4 over par 76.
Mario Di Leo and Mike Dominguez finished in 36th place with +6 over par 78. They had a rough front nine as well carding three bogeys and a double to go along with a birdie for a +4 over par 40. The back nine was a little friendlier to them as they finished the final nine +2 over.
The Barstool Classic National Championships, featuring 100 two-person teams who qualified in their regional play, will be held December 4th & 5th in Scottsdale, AZ.
